Vacation Hold Feature - Worth Considering By Camera Shy I have both the Honeywell RTH7600D (bought at Costco for around $65 and packaged there as model RCT8101A) and this Honeywell RTH8500D. Both units are very good with the one major difference being the "Vacation Hold" feature; the 8500 has it and the 7600/Costco version does not. The programming interface is different as well, however, one is not necessarily better than the other. The 7600 unit is a little easier to program whereas the 8500 offers a shortcut that allows multiple days to be programmed at once. Since you'll likely program the unit infrequently, I don't think this should necessarily be a consideration unless you are an installer of these units where time is money; then the 8500 is the unit of choice. The Costco version for me is going back because it lacks the Vacation Hold feature. If you travel or not at home frequently, the Vacation Hold feature allows you to hold the temperature, say, at 50 degrees for 10 days while you take off for a ski trip. With this feature, once the timed Vacation Hold is over, the thermostat resumes it's normal programming schedule. So, when you arrive home, the house temperature is at a comfortable level. The Costco version allows you to manually override the program schedule, however, you must manually remove the override as well. Therefore, when you arrive home from your ski trip, you come home to a cold house and you'll need to manually reset the thermostat and wait for the house to warm up. If this is not an important feature for you or you're are at home most of the time, go for the Costco version and save about $40. Otherwise, the RTH8500D is an excellent unit that has worked quite well for me over the past several years. UPDATE: We recently (May 2011) installed the RTH8500D in our bedroom. The "click" of the relay contact when the thermostat calls for activation annoys my wife who has rather sensitive hearing. I contacted Honeywell and they said the clicking sound is unavoidable at the current time and suggested insulating the back plate of the RTH8500D with 1/8" Styrofoam to deaden the relay sound. I temporarily tried a thick folded piece of clothing material and I didn't notice any difference. After reading other Honeywell thermostat reviews, the clicking sound seems to be universal across many of their thermostats. So, if considering a bedroom application, you may want test the unit to ensure it's within an acceptable noise level . 17 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Works even on older/non-standard units. By Starboard Home I had trouble finding programable thermostats that would control my split system Carrier heat pump. Honeywell has the installation manuals for every one of their units online ([...] I spent time looking at this unit's documentation to be sure it could handle my Carrier unit. Be careful, many Honeywell and other manufacturers have units that don't handle heat pumps, and some include "call a professional" in their instructions. Setup was a cinch and the ability to program temps for four times per day for up to seven days will save me money throughout the year. It's a simple unit, seems compatible with most systems, has some neat features like "vacation hold" where you can override all the programming and set a temperature to "hold" until you reset it for programming. You could be away for an evening or a month...it would honor the "hold" setting. There are a couple of "if this...then that" instructions, but they're really well put. I did notice a poor rating on one of Honeywell's other thermostats because one purchaser didn't realize the difference between possibilities linked with "AND" vs. "OR". "And" means EACH MUST EXIST, "Or" means ONLY ONE OF THEM SHOULD EXIST. So, although the instructions are excellent, they must be read carefully before using the unit on a more complex system, such as a heat pump.

By Ahmed Before I bought this product, I was kind of hesitant because of the not so good reviews but I decided to go ahead and give it a try. After trying it, I am more inclined to think that most of the negative reviews are because the reviewers did not know how to operate the device. For example, some complained about the temprature override requiring you to set an ending time. In fact the unit allows you to set either a temprary hold until a certain time, or a permanant hold which will take effect indefinately or a vacation hold. Yes, it will require an extra click but it is a useful feature which is better than forgetting your system on and leaving. You also do have control over the fan. Some other reviewer complained that the fan would go on and off during the night. When you program the time periods, you do have control over the fan mode. You can set it to on, auto (which turns on only when the compressor is running) and refresh which is the same as auto but also turns the fan on if the system is idle for more than an hour to keep the air fresh. Some complained about the fan turning on without the compressor.. Sounds to me like the recircuilation mode. This mode runs only if the system is idle for an hour and it lets the fan run for 10 , 15 or 20 minutes to bring fresh air. This was quite helpful when I set my temprature to 85 and the air used to be not so fresh by the time I got home because the ac never had to work. With this feature the air is fresh again by the time I got home. I believe this saves more energy than if i kept the temprature at 80 just to maintain freshness. On the negative side, installation did not go as smooth for me. The manual mentions some labels that you are supposed to find on the old unit which were labeled differently on my old white-rodgers. There was an o/b unit on the old and there was an "o" as well as a "b" on the new. With trial and error, i connected it to "o" and it worked. The manual mentions removing the jumper in case of a 5 wire connection. That jumper is important if you want the system to automatically switch over to using the furnace if the heat pump cannot keep up with the temprature. If you don't connect the jumper, the heat pump will work and you have to set it to emergency heat to use the furnace if you need to. One of the reviewers mentioned, you need to connect the wire to W1 and not W2 if you have a one stage system. You should not need to do that if you have your system type set correctly. I had a heat pump and it works fine when connected to W2. Also make sure your furnace type is set correctly (Electric or Gas). After you install the system, make sure you test both heating and cooling functions to avoid unpleasant surprises next season. ALSO, if you have a heat pump, make sure it is the heat pump that is running normally and NOT the furnace! If somehow you get the furnace to run all the time, you will get a HUGE electric bill. The compressor on the heat pump takes a lot of current to start. So if you see your lights flicker when the heat starts, that is a sign that the heat pump is starting and not the electric furnace. Also, the air from a heat pump is not super warm, it should be about body temprature compared to the toasty air from an electric furnace. Also if the heat pump is working, the air coming out of the fan of the outside unit will be cooler than the surrounding air. These guidelines applies to any thermostat and not just this one. Things that I noticed about heat pumps that i found confusing are: 1. If you start the heat pump then stop it, then start it again shortly, it might take a little bit of time to start to protect the unit. This can be particularly confusing when testing a thermostat and can lead you to believe that your connections are wrong even though if you wait for 5 minutess or so, everything will work as it

Rooney We have very contemporary high gloss black bedroom furnature.. finding a nice fan and one that matches was very hard to do, but this fan looks great and with a 15 degree pitch it really moves the air! It was subtantially more weight than our previous fan but due to the clever way Casablanca allows you to mount your fan inside the cowling it was simple to install if you have the right tools. The remote works great too and removes the need to addtional wiring for the light. The light can also be used as a dimmer. It is very hot in the room and it does not help. It is not the perfect solution, but it was cheaper to put in another door just yet. It requires a hole in the wall (obviously) so if you are able, keep this in mind. It is much quieter than the fan door that we have. I recommend it. 7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Big fan from room to room-air fan Athought Happy father, this is a 8 "fan is bigger than I expected. The fan blades are 8", but the shot is 10 ". The hole should be slightly more than 10" so you can fit. For some, making a hole 10 "on your wall you can out. This fan is beautiful. Volumn one has ups and downs. The movements of the low abundance of air is very low or high. It is the power cord connected to one, however hard they were able to wire to a power line on the wall, so you do not have a cable hanging with electrical knowledge is just that easy. Besides cutting the hole in the right place so it does not hit a post, it was very easy to install. We used to move hot air from a room with a wood stove to a kitchen area. It is a drastic difference in temperature after running for a short time. We use a blower door coner before installing this board. The fan-old has made almost no difference in temperature and was very noisy. Again, even in this high fan is very quiet and moves lots of air. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Does the work for Bill C. We bought this fan five months ago, and working well. I needed to get the additional ventilation in the laundry. This fan moves a lot of air, even at low speed. The installation was very easy, completed the job in about 30 minutes. The fan is a little noisy, however. This is not a problem in a laundry room (the sound of a fan Sone mid-range exhaust bathroom), but was in a room that you would rather it can be somewhat troublesome to consider whether they are ventilated in a closed room may want to put a valve second ( passive) in the room so that air can flow out of the room. The dimensions are for the exterior of the housing and do not contain nearly 1 inch on each side of the inner guard. In MacHankStein I bought two of these thermostats on the Amazon site and installed them just before the Memorial Day weekend I am very happy with two thermostats, but I had problems installing the thermostat upstairs. Even though I had turned the switch marked for the upper and lower heat pumps for their position in the panel, heat pump upstairs was still on, because I missed a fuse of the heat pump during installation. Obviously, this problem was caused by a lack of diligence on my part - to ensure that the power of the heat pump and thermostat was really. By Gipfeli I bought this thermostat because its sleek design, with all the checks that are not needed every day is hidden under the hood. If you live a very simple program, this thermostat will work for you follow. But if you leave the house in the country illegally and you do not want to keep the house warm while you're away, do not. The problem is that if you leave home and to manually stop the temperature, the temperature will return for two hours. This is neither on the box or documented in the manual. Only took me 15 minutes to complete the installation. I like the big screen and 7-day program that my old unit had. The instruction for the creation of the program is very easy to use. The only complaint is that the backlight, but only last 2 to 5 seconds and has a backlight button. In order to see at night, you have to press any buttons. When you press any button, the light comes on, but also change the configuration. You have to press the new timetable for implementation to keep normal. It is the only annoying part. I bought this unit for two reasons, one is the size of the source and the other is in the background. I hope the new product will keep the lamp more than 2 seconds, and there is a backlight button. Hughes asked this product to our room on the second floor fan to help cool the environment. The thermostat to control the fan speed is a great idea, but we do not always work only when the AC kicks on. When run, it is not exactly the kind of quiet and boring. This was a Consumer Reports "best buy models from last year (the other lux). I also really like Lux programming button that programming easier with the wheel, there are less obscure key combinations to use. Installation is simple and straightforward . The display on the 1,500 th is quite large and has an electroluminescent backlight that is activated by pressing a button. I'm farsighted, but the screen can read without my glasses. The 1,500 th thermostat is a 5-1-1, but also a "special" schemes that can be used for holiday or vacation make this a 5-1-1-1 thermostat. I found the program to quickly and easily and the device works as advertised. I have a complaint or a whim of the complaint mentioned: The manual is not the best. In particular, there is little explanation of the swing function or what the numbers really mean swing. I sent an email to Lux and received a call the next day with a detailed explanation.
